The Optoma HD 20 1080P projector is by far the best HD projector under $1000 and maybe even under $1500!!! Right out of the box, it is packaged excellently. Comes with easy to read manuals and a cd. Watching blu-rays on this thing is beautiful. The 1080P really shows on the smoothness of images and the colors are breathtaking and the blacks are deeper than what most people say they are as long as you adjust the settings. The settings right out of the box aren’t great so definitely adjust them. HDTV looks amazing too. .

The pixel numbers of 1280×800 (WXGA) allow 720p resolution movies to be played at exactly 720p, and not have to be modified to fit other pixel numbers; this is assuming you will not have to ‘keystone’ the screen, which you probably will. The screen is watchable with lights on due to it’s brightness, the only problem is that light make the black less black, and no projector can fix that.

Some of this merits explaining. Sports gamma is the brightest of the three available gamma curves. Unlike the same mode on other projectors, it has very little green push. It’s also good about adding definition to the blacks without messing with the black point. I compensated for the green with a slight tint adjustment.

ANSI contrast is excellent. Any scene with lights and darks, which is almost all of them, has as much punch as a non-CRT projector can have. The HC3800 surpasses the two Epson LCD projectors significantly in this area.
Absolute black levels are good to very good. Credits and space scenes with small stars look inky. Scenes where a character is bumbling around in the dark are less compelling; as your vision adjusts, the blacks look closer to slate.

This is the perfect projector for someone who is looking for an entry level theater in their home… and maybe even more. An 82 inch screen onto a flat ultra white base paint and this looks sharper than my 42″ LCD. The colors are vivid and the blacks are nice and dark. No issues and this is only in standard mode. The machine is whisper quiet also.

The picture is perfect with the lights on or off even in Eco mode. The other location is a very large wall in the living room that the back ground is Maroon. This projector throws the picture 30 feet across the room and makes an image that can be from 20 foot to 28 feet wide. Even on the Red wall the color is amazing (except for the reds which are ummm… extra red 
. For the money this is better than any TV.
